Machinima: In filmmaking, machinima (pronounced /məˈʃiːnɨmə/ or /məˈʃɪnɨmə/) refers to the use of real-time three-dimensional (3-D) graphics rendering engines to generate computer animation, or to films that incorporate this animation. Machinima filmmakers, sometimes called machinimists or machinimators, often use graphics engines from video games. (from Wikipedia)
I have been a fan of machinima for a very long time and last year I saw a film that floored me enough to inspire me to make one of my own. Normally the most challenging part is to come up with a story for your film. Well, fortunately, I had the inspiration from a song; in this case Devour by Shinedown. Devour is a song with political tones aimed at the then President Bush administration. However, being a fan of Dawn of the Dead, Evil Dead, and the like I thought it would be fun to make a music video about zombie cannibalism.
Next I had to chose which engine or engines that I would use to create the film. Since I had been playing World of Warcraft for over three years with my wife up to that point then using an Undead was a 'no brainer' (pun intended). However, I wanted to up the personal challenge by mixing it with F.E.A.R. The idea was to take characters in World of Warcraft and composite them into scenes not just in WoW, but also in F.E.A.R. and in real scenes that I shot on our performance theater stage at work.
Mind you, I have never been to school for any of this (yet) so if you want to see how I hacked my way through making this video then go to the next page.
