Okay, well here is the second build report for BoneSaw. We are rushing around like crazy trying to get everything finished in time for this weekend's event and the fact that several parts were either delayed in being shipped to us or was jet cut incorrectly or to the wrong tolerances didn't help matters. Below are some pictures from the latest build day (and evening and night and into the early morning. Thank goodness for Red Bull :-p)

Here is the pile-o-parts that we got back from the local water jet place. The triangular pieces are for the front wedge, the goggle looking pieces are supports for the weapon motors, the funky shaped thing in the middle is the top of the weapon motor gearbox and the rest is just some miscellaneous parts for the bot.

This is Kent who also works for Linear Machine. While Mike (our team machinist) is recovering from some injuries from the lathe Kent and the rest of the crew stepped up to help us out with some of our custom machining needs.

This is the top piece of the weapon motor gearbox getting machined to accept the recessed main bearing and to fit down inside the rest of the gearbox for a nice tight fit.

And Voila! Here is the weapon motor (which is actually six motors) all assembled. It took almost two hours just to assemble this thing!

Not only do these supports keeps the motors from moving around they also hold an oil impregnated bushing that supports the pinion shaft to make sure that we have as little play in it as possible.

And here it is with the top plate on the box to seal it up. Nice fit, eh?

Here's a shot of the blade on the output shaft to give you an idea of the sizes invloved.

And a wide view. You'll notice that the blade has a kind of blue tint to it. That is from the heat treating. This blade was treated to a Rockwell C 53 so give it a lot of strength but still soft enough to resist breaking.

This is what it looks like with the carbon fiber top in place.

Geez, titanium is some tough stuff to drill through!

Let's make some pinion gear shafts!

Here's Buzz buffing the weapon blade after the discoloration of the heat treatment.

Mmmm... Nothing like a Red Bull to keep you going at 2:00 AM on a work night :-) And this gives you an idea of the height of the blade. So, if you bot is shorter than half a can of Red Bull then you might have a chance :-D
